Feb. 19, 2025 – Candidate CARTA bus ride with Best Friends of Lowcountry Transit @ 7am

For over ten years, Best Friends of Lowcountry Transit and Hungryneck Straphangers have been taking candidates for Mount Pleasant Town Council and Mayoral Elections on guided CARTA bus trips during the campaign season. This gives candidates the opportunity to meet voters and learn about conditions on our bus lines, which our town has worked hard to retain and improve over the last 15 years. Mount Pleasant pays over 40% of the sales taxes which goes to support CARTA, but receives only 5% of the bus service.

Despite challenges, our community has been a national leader in building better transit in suburban communities in the US. Before Covid, we increased transit ridership here to 308% of its 2007 level. Gentrification and reductions in on site employment have reduced ridership levels somewhat from their 2014 peak level.

Mount Pleasant Town Council Special Election Forum

LWV Charleston is hosting a virtual candidate forum for the Mt Pleasant Town Council Special election that will be held on March 25th. Attendees will hear directly from all ten candidates running for this seat. This special election results from the resignation of Carl Ritchie, who has been elected as Charleston County Sheriff.

Mt Pleasant Town Council seats are non-partisan and represent the town at-large rather than by districts. In alphabetical order, the ten candidates who will participate are:

Jordan Bryngelson; Gary Davis; Brianna Harmon; Derek Johnson; Garrett Lacy; David Smith; David Spedden; Bob Swain; Mike Tinkey; and Mike Van Horn Sr.

We look forward to your attendance at this forum, and appreciate your interest in our local election process.

Please log in with the Zoom link when the program begins at 6pm on Tuesday, February 25.
